Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Carnival

Published

On Friday 5 May and Saturday 6 May, the Point to Point Transport Commissioner’s Authorised Officers conducted compliance activities at the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Carnival, with around 12,000 attendees.

The targeted compliance operation inspected taxis, ride share and hire vehicles at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club to ensure the safety of the public by assessing vehicle standards and driver compliance.
During the operation, a total of 24 vehicles were inspected, 9 rideshare and hire vehicles, and 15 taxis.

The results showed that overall compliance was good. Issues of non-compliance, however, were:

  • An Improvement Notice was issued to a taxi service provider for not having a compliant security camera in good working order. Security cameras are required in all taxis that provide rank and hail passenger services as an additional layer of safety due to the anonymous nature of this work. It is essential that the service provider, vehicle owners and drivers make sure the camera system is operating when conducting rank and hail work.
  • The operation revealed that retroreflective signs continue to be an ongoing issue in targeted compliance operations with 7 Penalty Notices issued to rideshare drivers. Retroreflective signs identify that the driver has been properly onboarded and provides booked services for an authorised service provider. Service providers should ensure drivers understand their obligation to display a retroreflective sign on the vehicle.  All service providers and drivers are reminded that this safety obligation is relevant throughout NSW.

Our retroreflective sign toolkit provides resources that can easily be shared with drivers.
  • A Prohibition Notice was also issued to a rideshare vehicle owner for driving with tyres that had insufficient tread and not ensuring the vehicle is appropriately maintained as required by the law.  Providing passenger services with tyres that have insufficient tread is dangerous for both passengers and drivers.

Our Authorised Officers continue to conduct regular and targeted compliance activities throughout regional and metropolitan NSW to ensure the safety of everyone in the point to point transport industry.
