Let’s make every ride a safe ride

Safety is the Point to Point Transport Commissioner’s top priority.

The Commissioner works with the industry to ensure everyone understands and meets their safety obligations throughout a passenger service – ensuring safe journeys for all.

NSW has strong safety laws to ensure the safety of taxi, rideshare and hire vehicle passenger services.

For instance, all drivers must undergo ongoing checks, drivers providing rank and hail taxi services must display their driver ID, bookings should provide the vehicle’s registration details, rideshare vehicles must display a retroreflective sign at the rear of the vehicle, and touting and soliciting (approaching someone for a ride) is illegal.

To support passengers, we’ve developed some handy safety tips that can be used when catching a taxi or rideshare. You’ll see our safety messaging online, at taxi ranks and bus stops and local venues. Share these safety tips with a friend and together, let’s make every ride a safe ride.

Safety tips for passengers:

  • Make sure the car registration details match your booking confirmation before you get in
  • Check the driver’s name and photo against the service provider’s booking app (where applicable)
  • Use the service provider’s in-app safety features
  • Tell a friend or family member that you’re on your way and when they can expect to see you
  • Never accept a ride from somebody who approaches you
  •  Always try to wait for your ride in a well-lit area so the driver can see you and safely pick you up,
  • Where possible, catch a taxi from a secure taxi rank – we have more than 50 secure ranks across NSW that operate late every Friday and Saturday night,
  • If you want to make a safety complaint, try to take note of the number plate and the service provider.

Have you recently witnessed or experienced unsafe behaviour?

Everyone who experiences or witnesses criminal behaviour in a point to point transport vehicle is urged to contact the police.
