On 6 May 2025, the Point to Point Transport Commissioner cancelled Whitecab Service Pty. Ltd.’s (Whitecab) authorisations to provide taxi and booking services. Whitecab is now prohibited from providing taxi and booking services in NSW.
Under point to point law, any service provider found providing passenger services without an authorisation could face a fine of up to $110,000.
The authorisation was cancelled due to several safety concerns held by the Commissioner including non-compliance with driver and vehicle safety standards, conditions of authorisation and risk management. For example, Whitecab had an inadequate driver onboarding process and non-compliant duress alarm system.
As part of the Commissioner’s ongoing oversight of the industry, Whitecab’s authorisation cancellation followed a targeted safety audit, fleet inspections and on-street compliance activities.
New South Wales has strong safety laws to ensure the safety of taxi, rideshare and hire vehicle passengers, and every provider must comply with these safety standards. All service providers must ensure their vehicles are appropriately registered and safe to be driven on the road, and drivers must clear a series of background checks before they can provide passenger services.
Commissioner Wing commented: “there are more than 2,400 authorised service providers (taxis, rideshare and hire vehicles) in New South Wales, and I want them and the public to know that I will not hesitate to act decisively if there are safety, or other concerns, which pose a risk to drivers and passengers”.
“Safety is my priority, and I want every ride taken in a point to point transport service to be a safe ride. My oversight spans the entire industry including global rideshare businesses, taxi companies, limousine services and tourist operators”.
