Point to Point Transport Commissioner meeting communities as new regulations come into effect

Published

More choice and flexibility for customers and greater autonomy for industry are at the heart of new rules for taxis, hire cars and rideshare coming into effect in NSW from 1 November 2017.

The point to point transport industry is set to become more competitive, innovative and responsive, with the new Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016. The law will allow all point to point transport industry players to adopt new technologies, establish more flexible business models and set more competitive prices for customers.

With a completely new regulatory framework based on 56 recommendations of the Point to Point Transport taskforce report, there is a lot to take on board.

NSW Point to Point Transport Commissioner, Barbara Wise, will be leading industry information sessions in regional and metropolitan New South Wales throughout August and September.

The sessions will give industry an overview of what the new law means for their business, with a focus on new safety standards and the online services the Point to Point Transport Commission will offer to make it easier for industry to comply.

It is an opportunity for point to point transport businesses to receive practical advice about the new law and how to provide safer services for their customers.

“The point to point industry has changed,” said the Commissioner. “Customers have embraced new ways of booking and paying for services and the greater range and affordability of services.

“Work is underway to transition existing service providers to the Commission systems to allow a seamless changeover to the new law, which focuses on the safety of point to point transport services.

“I am focused on education and partnering with industry to promote compliance.

“I encourage all point to point transport providers to attend one of the upcoming information sessions. It will help give you a head start prior to the regulations coming into effect in November.”

Entry to the forums is free, with the first kicking off in Tweed Heads on Tuesday 22 August 2017. The new website will also be live, providing more information, resources and contact details for the industry.
