Sydney Marathon road closures and special event clearways

Major roads in North Sydney, the Sydney CBD, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Moore Park, Centennial Park and Kingsford will be closed between 2am and 4pm on Sunday 31 August while more than 45,000 runners take part in Sydney Marathon 42km and 10kmm events.

Service providers should advise drivers to familiarise themselves with the road closures ahead of time and allow extra travel time on the day as traffic may be heavy on detour routes.

Major road closures

  • The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Western Distributor will be closed in both directions from 3am to 11am with no direct access between the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Anzac Bridge during this time. The Cahill Expressway will be closed until 11.30am. The Sydney Harbour Tunnel will remain open but delays are expected. Consider using the Gladesville Bridge and Anzac Bridge alternative route instead.
  • Major roads from the city to Moore Park will be closed from 4am until 3.30pm including College St, Oxford St, and Park St, Flinders St until 3pm. Macquarie St will remain closed until 4pm.
  • In the South East, Anzac Pde from Moore Park to Kingsford will be closed from 5am to 1.30pm this year.

Drivers will only be able to travel east/west across the course via the Cross City Tunnel which will be toll-free from 5am to 4.30pm or via surface roads including Gardeners Rd, Bunnerong Rd and Maroubra Rd in the South East. From 1pm motorists can use Cleveland St to travel east or west across the course. The Eastern Distributor Anzac Pde entry and exit will be closed, however the Bondi Moore Park Rd exit will remain open this year.

Cross City Tunnel toll changes

The Cross City Tunnel will be the only way to travel directly east and west across the course in the city’s north while roads are closed for the event.

The Cross City Tunnel will be toll-free in both directions from 5am to 4.30pm on event day however long delays are expected. Standard toll pricing applies before 5am and after 4.30pm.

Taxi rank changes and rideshare restrictions

Most taxi ranks within the closure footprint will not be accessible while roads are closed.

Managed access to some Sydney CBD taxi ranks within the road closure footprint will be maintained for hotel guests and local residents from 4am to 11.30am. 
 

  • Bridge St between George St and Pitt St (northern side), vehicle access via Lang St and Grosvenor St only.
  • Phillip St between Bent and Hunter St (eastern side), vehicle access via Elizabeth St and Market St intersection only.
    For participant drop off, use the dedicated areas near the start line in North Sydney.
  • Drop off zone: ANZAC Park Public School, Anzac Ave at Ernest St
  • Accessible drop off zone: North Sydney Boys High School car park, entry via Falcon St

Be aware that high pedestrian activity is expected along Falcon St as participants make their way to the start line from Crows Nest and other nearby areas. Exercise caution and allow extra travel time, or consider the alternative routes.

Divers should expect delays on detour routes and familiarise themselves with road closures and alternative routes on event day.

Drivers are reminded to pick up and drop off passengers away from closed roads to avoid delays.


Parking restrictions

Special event clearway parking restrictions will be in effect on major roads along and surrounding the course between 12.01am and 10am. In North Sydney some clearways remain in effect until 12 midday, in the city some clearways remain in effect until 3pm.

Clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicle types and apply even to local residents and TfNSW Mobility Scheme Permit holders. Check signs carefully as vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. If your vehicle is towed, you can search your vehicle registration at the Find My Car website to find its new location, or alternatively call 132 701 to speak to an operator.
