Fixed fares trialled at Sydney Airport

Published

From Monday 3 November, all taxi trips from a taxi rank at Sydney Airport to the Sydney CBD trial area will be charged at a fixed fare as part of an 18-month trial. The new fares are $60 for a taxi transporting a person in a wheelchair and any standard taxi, and $80 for a requested maxi taxi or if there are 5 or more passengers.

The trial, announced by NSW Transport Minister, John Graham in September, aims to provide price clarity for taxi passengers as well as reduce instances of overcharging and misuse of taxi meters.

The trial commences just in time for summer and end of year festivities, when Sydney can expect an influx of visitors, many visiting Sydney for the first time. With Sydney Airport and the Sydney CBD being major destinations for millions of visitors each year, the trial is a positive step that sees taxi passengers of New South Wales, as well as from overseas and interstate, travel with confidence.

Details of the trial have been communicated to taxi service providers operating at Sydney Airport to ensure they’re well-prepared for the changes.

The Commissioner’s team will continue to work closely with taxi service providers to ensure compliance with the trial, with any taxi driver found in breach of the trial (conditions) facing a significant fine of $1,000. NSW Government are looking to raise the fine to $3,000 as a deterrent to drivers who commit fare-related fines including overcharging, refuse to use the meter or refuse a fare.
