2 September – 8 September 2024
Before the court
The Point to Point Transport Commissioner’s Compliance team conducts regular on-street operations along with targeted compliance operations.
For instance, Authorised Officers are regularly out in force conducting plain clothes and highly visible operations targeting drivers providing rank and hail taxi services not using the meter, overcharging or refusing a fare if it is considered too short, negotiate a fare, or demand a fare other than the one displayed on the meter. If caught, drivers face a fine of $1000.
More than 800 fines have been issued to drivers since November 2022 for fare related breaches.
A recent court matter resulted in the driver being convicted and fined $2000 for overcharging (demanding a fare exceeding that determined under the NSW Fares Order.)
The Magistrate noted that overcharging was not a trivial matter - this outcome and fine should come as a warning for those drivers choosing to break the law.
AFL and NRL finals (at the SCG and ACCOR Stadiums)
The Commissioner’s on-street team of Authorised Officers has also been out in force ensuring safety is the winner at major sporting events this week.
On Sat 7th September, The Sydney Swans took on the GWS Giants at the SCG at Moore Park, and the Canterbury Bulldogs went head to head with the Manly Sea Eagles at ACCOR Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park.
Across the two events, 38 rideshare vehicles and 22 taxis were inspected by the team.
While overall compliance was good, 3 fines were identified.
1 rideshare driver was identified providing services without a retroreflective sign, 1 taxi was identified not having a taxi holder in the vehicle for the display of the driver’s ID and 1 taxi was caught stopping in a taxi zone while not available for hire.
Service providers are asked to address the above issues with their drivers and ensure the behaviour stops. Visit the Point to Point Transport Commissioner website for more information:

Further education
Standing in a taxi zone is intended for taxis that are available for hire. Rideshare vehicles must not stop, stand or queue in a taxi zone. If a taxi is already hired or not available for hire, it must not occupy the taxi zone.
The use of security camera systems in taxis providing rank and hail passenger services is critical in supporting the safety of drivers and passengers. All vehicles providing taxi passenger services in NSW must be fitted with an approved security camera system that is in good working order and complies with specifications under the law.
