Weekly Wrap: on-street compliance

Published

The Commissioner’s on-street Inspectors were kept busy this week attending multiple sports, racing and other events across Sydney and the rest of the state. The Inspectors were onsite to monitor and enforce compliance as well as ensuring passenger safety.

Across the week 7 April 2025 to 13 April 2025:

  • 21 breaches were identified
  • 18 Improvement Notices were issued
  • 3 Prohibition Notices were issued.

The Star Championship Day – Randwick Races

On 12 April 2025, the second and final day of The Star Championships, the Grand Finals of Australian Racing, took place at the Royal Randwick Racecourse.

It was a very busy day with patrons arriving continuously throughout the day. The taxi rank was in high demand, and the on-street Inspectors were onsite to monitor compliance, deterring drivers from demanding fixed fares and to ensure they accepted hirings. The Inspectors’ vehicles were also strategically positioned within the taxi rank pick up area, clearly displaying signs to drivers and patrons alike that taxis must use the meter.

The team was kept very busy, inspecting 128 rideshare vehicles and 85 taxis, and issued twelve Penalty Notices, three Improvement Notices as well as one Prohibition Notice.

Super Rugby: Waratahs vs. Chiefs – Moore Park Entertainment Quarter

On 11 April 2025, the New South Wales Waratahs hosted the New Zealand Chiefs for their Super Rugby Pacific game. The match, held at the Moore Park Entertainment Quarter, was attended by 14,000 sports fans, with the New South Wales team claiming victory.

The on-street Inspectors were strategically positioned in key locations around the precinct and the team worked well in conjunction with other transport stakeholders such as the NSW Police. The team patrolled designated pickup points and taxi zones to ensure compliance and passenger safety.

The team inspected 10 rideshare vehicles and 8 taxis and the level of compliance was excellent with no Penalty or Improvement Notices issued!

A-League Football: Sydney FC vs. Auckland FC

On 12 April 2025, another New Zealand team descended in New South Wales for the men’s soccer game between Sydney and Auckland FC, which was also held at the Moore Park Entertainment Quarter.

With many patrons using public transport, the taxi rank on Errol Flynn Boulevard was relatively quiet during the evening and before the game’s end. Taxis were being directed to use the taxi rank, which lowered the number of taxis trying to rank illegally on Moore Park Road.

The Inspectors positioned themselves at the taxi rank to ensure it was clear from private and rideshare vehicles as well as to ensure that taxi drivers were accepting hirings and using the meter.

Inspectors checked 14 rideshare vehicles and 12 taxis, with a great overall level of compliance as no Penalty or Improvement Notices were issued!
