Weekly Wrap - on-street compliance actvities

Published

10 September – 16 September 2024

September and October are busy months for major sporting events across NSW. As a result, our metro-based Compliance team, and teams based in Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Grafton, are on the road and out in force ensuring safety at major events as well as their normal on street compliance activities.

Between 9 –13 September, compliance operations were conducted in Ballina, Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour targeting driver compliance. More than 20 vehicles were inspected in the operations, with 7 fines reported along with 2 improvement notices for worn tyres.

Major events

On Sat 15 September, the Sydney Marathon took place. Sydney Marathon is striving to become one of the premiere Marathons in the world, with over 25,000 runners, including international travellers, running past some of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks, including the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

The Commissioner’s Authorised Officers also hit the streets to ensure safety for those travelling to and from the event. While overall compliance was good, 2 fines were reported.

Authorised Officers also inspected 15 rideshare vehicles and 10 taxis.

On the 14 September, the AFL Elimination Final was held at Engie Stadium and the 30 Seconds from Mars concert was held at Qudos Bank Arena – both in Sydney Olympic Park.

Local road management conditions created a continual flow for taxis and rideshare vehicles.

Authorised Officers inspected 8 rideshare vehicles and 10 taxis, no fines or improvement notices were reported.

Further education

The lack of retroreflective signs on rideshare vehicles continues to be a top weekly offence. They are a very important safety measure for passengers, drivers and the public. Service providers should increase their efforts to address this issue with their drivers and ensure this behaviour is rectified. Visit our website for more information: Retroreflective Sign Toolkit

Noting that improvement notices were issued to vehicles this week with warn tyres please find a link to a previous Safety Alert that draws attention to the dangers of providing passenger services with bald tyres and reminds vehicle owners that they have safety obligations under the law to ensure vehicles are safe to be driven on the road and appropriately maintained. Service providers must also ensure that this safety standard is met, and drivers must not provide passenger services in an unsafe vehicle.
