Vehicle insurance fact sheet

In NSW, every vehicle used to provide a point to point passenger services, for example taxis, hire or rideshare vehicles, are required to hold third-party property insurance with a cover of at least $5 million.

Third-party property insurance covers for damage caused to other people’s vehicles or property arising out of an accident.

Why is third-party property insurance required on top of CTP Insurance?

When registering any vehicle in NSW you are required to have compulsory third party insurance (CTP) also known as a ‘Green Slip’. This form of insurance protects any person that you might injure while you are driving a vehicle, including pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. It does not cover for damage caused to other people’s vehicles or property.

I own a vehicle providing point to point transport services. What is my responsibility? 

As a vehicle owner, you are responsible for maintaining your vehicle’s 
•    third-party insurance and 
•    compulsory third party insurance (CTP) also known as a ‘Green Slip’.

I am a service provider, what are my obligations?

As a taxi or booking service provider you must:
•    ensure all vehicles have appropriate insurance
•    maintain appropriate records to monitor and confirm insurance policies are current and compliant with point to point transport law
•    check the policy or policies have been renewed on time without any gap in days while the vehicle is being used to provide passenger services.

Will insurance be checked during a safety audit? 

During a safety audit, an Authorised Officer will verify that:
•    the vehicle or vehicles are correctly insured
•    the service provider has a procedure in place to check the vehicle is insured appropriately.
