COVID-19 safety measure: QR codes in taxis

Published

The Point to Point Transport Commissioner is working with the NSW Government to support industry to get QR Codes for contact tracing into taxis across NSW.

An industry trial has been carried out by Legion and Premier Cabs using the Service NSW App and 13Cabs has rolled out QR code check-ins using their own passenger registration technology.

Taxi service providers are encouraged to roll out QR codes to their vehicles using either their own QR code technology or the Service NSW App.

Point to point transport passengers, specifically those using rank and hail taxi services in NSW can expect to see this service rolled out across the state in the coming weeks.

Passengers are asked to scan the sticker or seat card featuring the QR code with their mobile phone to check-in and provide their contact details before commencing, or during their trip. NSW health encourages commuters to sit in the back and wear a mask.

The QR Code check-in keeps a record of the passenger journey and this data is shared with NSW Health in a case where contact tracing is required.

The use of QR codes in taxis is voluntary, so if a passenger refuses to scan the QR code during their journey, a driver does not have the right to refuse the fare.

If you are a service provider and would like to take part in this program you are encouraged to contact Service NSW on: taxi.registration@service.nsw.gov.au.
